Pain is often difficult for patients to describe and for medical providers to interpret in many clinic practices. Patient centered physical examination techniques are taught providers to examine human anatomy through specific deep tissue palpation, and shifting anatomical joint structures to positions of greater comfort. Therapeutics then can often be provided to alleviate or resolve patient’s pain symptoms in short order. The goal of this website is to assist beneficiaries and medical providers of the Navy and Department of Defense, with practical and economical methods for chronic pain reduction and/or relief and to conduct onsite training for medical providers worldwide.
Interested MD and DO physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and advanced Corpsmen and medics may be trained through this Navy Medicine project. The course is two (2) full days of classes, discussions, presentations, clinical laboratories, and then proctored clinics with actual patients. In a scheduled chronic pain teaching clinic, providers will apply new diagnostic and therapeutic skills with known patients from their community and then monitor their progress afterwards. Orthopedic medicine therapeutic training and clinics may be provided to military medical treatment facilities, MTF, onsite worldwide. This effort will increase the medical skills of interested physicians and medical providers. Diagnosis and therapeutic methods are taught for: Pelvis, Lumbar spine, Thoracic spine, Ribs, Cervical spine (cervical spine credentials are only available to advanced skills physicians and providers at this time), and all portions of the upper and lower extremities. Credentials may be attained when completing the course, demonstrating competency and safety.
Department of Defense beneficiaries with chronic pain disorders may register to be seen by a trained provider, a visiting training team at their military treatment facility or travel at their expense to Naval Hospital Pensacola for evaluation and possible treatment. Other MTFs will be announced in the future.
Patient registration will require the completion of comprehensive questionnaires with pain drawings, pain scales, quality of life and contact information. Once registered, conformation will be made by email or phone. Appointments with providers will be dependent upon trained provider schedules and/or provider training courses in your area. Patients willing to participate in provider training sessions will need to allow for at least half of a day at their local clinic.
Patients will be requested to return to the web site approximately one week after treatment, then periodically for up to a year, to have their current symptoms evaluated. This will be done by an email link to their file on this website (preferred) or a phone call. Patients will have access to their basic information at this site through a web link and a personal PIN number. Treating physicians and medical providers will have access to their patients records to review clinical questionnares and update diagnostic codes.
